capitol bldg. Jefferson City is the capitol of the State of Missouri. There are many things to see in this city and, especially in the Capitol Complex. The first stop should of course, be the capitol building. The photo at the left shows the south side or back of the capitol.

There are several fountains on the capitol grounds. This one is on the south side of the building.
Louisian Purchase Plaque
The Louisiana Purchase which included the territory which makes up the state of Missouri is represented by this sculpture found on the north side of the capitol grounds.
Thomas Jefferson
This statue of Thomas Jefferson guards the south entrance to the capitol building.

The fountains north of the capitol building are active during the warm months. They are shut down during the winter to prevent freezing and damage.
Law Enforcement Memorial
The Law Enforcement Memorial honors all Missouri Law Enforcement personnel killed in the line of duty.
War Memorial
There is a war memorial for each war in which Missouri soldiers participated from the Mexican-American War to the Persian Gulf War.
liberty bell
A replica of the Liberty Bell is located on the grounds North of the capitol building and just west of the fountains.

The capitol building is filled with beautiful fixtures and gorgeous art work. Thomas Hart Benton painted some of the paintings in the capitol. You can read about him under "Famous Missourians".
Senate Chambers
The Senate Chambers are a beautiful example of the architecture of the capitol.
Capitol north side
This is a north side view of the state capitol building. Housed in this building is not only the offices of our elected officials, but also a great museum. Half of the museum is dedicated to the history of our state. The other half is dedicated to the industry and natural resources of Missouri.
Governor's Mansion
The Governor's Mansion which is located in the 100 block of Madison Street, was built in 1871. It features period furnishing and can be toured by the public. To find more information on these tours or to take an online tour go to: http://www.missourimansion.org/
Mansion Gardens
The mansion gardens are filled with beautiful flowers and are open to the public. Many visitors to the capitol city like to take a break in the gardens.
Supreme Court Building
The Supreme Court Building is across the street on the south side of the capitol. This building was completed in 1907 after the 1875 constitution provided for a permanent seat in Jefferson City.
St. Peters Church
St. Peter's Church has been a part of the community since the 1800's. It was the cathedral of the Jefferson City Diocese from 1956 until 1968 when the new St. Joseph's Cathedral was opened.
  There are many more things to see in Jefferson City such as the Runge Nature Center, Jefferson Landing, the Porth House and much more.
