Independence

In Independence is located the Truman Presidential Museum and Library. At this museum and library, one can learn about Harry S Truman during his presidential years. There are two permanent displays, Harry S Truman: His Life and Times and Harry S Truman: The Presidential years. Besides these, there are many more exhibits.

This victorian home where First Lady Bess Truman grew up became known as the Summer White House. This house was home for Harry S and Bess Truman from their marriage in 1919 until their deaths. The house was completed by Bess Truman's grandfather in 1885.

Independence is not only known as the hometown of Harry S Truman; but was also the beginning of the Santa Fe, Oregon and California trails. Independence has several heritage attractions just a short distance from the historic downtown square. You can see Victorian mansions, the National Frontier Trails Museum and the 1859 Jail and Marshal's Home.
